I take prescription and non-prescription medications. Can I give blood?

Yes! Few medications prevent people from donating blood. You can donate blood if you take aspirin, receive allergy shots, take allergy medications, take thyroid medications or high blood pressure medications. It is best to call the Rock River Valley Blood Center at 877-RRVBC-99 to check and see if your medication is acceptable.

Is donating blood painful?

No! When you donate blood, you will feel a slight pinch when the needle is inserted into your arm.

Is it safe to donate blood?

Absolutely! Donating blood is safe and simple. New, sterile, disposable equipment is used for each donor. You cannot contract any disease from donating blood.

How often can I give blood?

You can donate blood every fifty-six days or six times per year.

How long does it take to give a pint of blood?

It takes approximately one hour to donate blood. The donation process itself takes five to seven minutes. Most of your time is spent giving your health history to a Donor Care Specialist and enjoying refreshments afterward.

Will I feel faint after giving blood?

Most people feel fine after their donation. It is important to eat heartily and drink plenty of fluids before and after your donation.

Why should I give blood?

RRVBC supplies 8 local hospitals with their blood needs. 1000 units of blood are needed each week in order to keep up with local demands for blood. It is vital to patient safety that we have a safe, adequate supply of blood on hand for anyone who should need it.

Is all blood collected tested?

Yes! Each pint of blood collected at RRVBC must pass all 14 tests performed. Some tests performed include blood typing, West Nile Virus, Hepatitis and HIV.
