Volunteer Information
Why do we need volunteers?
A volunteer program at RRVBC is vital to help provide
a variety of services in the most cost-effective
manner while maintaining a high level of quality
and customer service. A volunteer program affirms
to the public our status as a non-profit organization
striving to meet the needs of the community we
serve. Volunteers working with RRVBC staff and
dealing with blood donors and hospital personnel
help to reinforce our goal of providing safe blood
components and related services to Northern Illinois
and Southern Wisconsin at the lowest practical cost.
A volunteer program at RRVBC can have a positive
effect on every part of our organization.
Departments where volunteers are needed:
Donor Care: The Donor Care area is responsible for
assessing a donor's suitability to donate blood and to
collect a safe and pure blood product. The Donor
Care Staff also provides a safe, pleasant, clean, and
well-stocked canteen for donors and visitors, inspect
and assemble blood bags, and assist with mobile collections
by transporting and setting-up equipment
and supplies. Volunteers in the donor care area:
- Serve refreshments to donors and visitors in the canteen
- Assemble blood bags
- Segment units of blood
- Assist the staff with restocking supplies
Donor Services: The Donor Services area is responsible
for encouraging donors to give up one hour of
their day to replenish the blood supply in the
Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin area.
Donor Services does this by scheduling, confirming,
and registering donors in-house and at mobile
drives. Volunteers in the donor services area:
- Help the staff make phone calls to donors
- Assist with other clerical jobs
Donor Recruitment: The Donor Resource area's
primary objective is to recruit new and retain
existing donors. Donor Resources interacts with
employers, organizations, schools and civic groups
in the communities served by RRVBC to educate,
plan blood drives, recruit donors for their drives,
and to maintain good community relations.
Volunteers in the Donor Recruitment area:
- Help with health fairs and special events in the community
- Work with area companies, schools and organizations planning blood drives
Laboratory and Distribution: The laboratory
staff is responsible for the safe preparation of blood
products, the performance of blood testing,
labeling of all blood products, management of
inventory control, and the distribution of blood
products to the RRVBC service hospitals.
Volunteers in the distribution area:
- Deliver blood product to the hospitals served by RRVBC.
- Return collected units of blood back to RRVBC from mobile sites

opportunities for groups to help RRVBC.
